11 Years After the Earthquake:
The Present and Future of Fukushima
The environmental restoration projects have been in progress since 2011.
Although we are only midway on the road to environmental restoration and revitalization, we are making steady progress one step at a time.
Achievement of environmental restoration and the prosperity of the region, “Fukushima of Today”
Current Situation
With the exception of areas that are restricted, whole area decontamination has been completed, and the evacuation order for areas where whole area decontamination has been completed has been lifted.
Changes in the Air Dose Rate (Map of the area within 80 km)
* What is the air dose rate? The amount of radiation in the air is referred to as the air dose rate, and the air dose rate indicates the amount of air dose per hour.
Decontamination in residential areas reduced the radiation dose by 60%, and a subsequent investigation showed that it had fallen by 76%.This confirms that the effects of surface decontamination are being maintained.
[Timing]
Pre-decontamination measurement: Nov. 2011 – Nov. 2016
Post-decontamination measurement: Dec. 2011 – Nov. 2017
Subsequent monitoring: Oct. 2014 – Aug. 2018
* Average value of the air dose rate in residential areas, agricultural land, forests, and roads (aggregation of measurement point data)
* Residential areas include schools, parks, graveyards, and large-size facilities. Agricultural land includes fruit farms. Forests also include slopes, plains, and grasslands.
The air dose rate in Fukushima Prefecture is at the same level as major cities around the world.
The air dose rate in Fukushima Prefecture has been decreasing over time, and at present is at nearly the same level as major cities overseas.
Status of Evacuation Zone
Specified Reconstruction and Revitalization Bases Area
"Specified Reconstruction and Revitalization Bases Area" refers to the area designated within the "Restricted area", which has been restricted from living in the future, and which aims to lift the evacuation order. Decontamination, dismantling of buildings, and infrastructure construction are being carried out. Of the six municipalities designated, the evacuation order was lifted for three municipalities in 2022, and will be lifted for the remaining three municipalities in 2023.
The three municipalities of Futaba Town, Katsurao Village, and Okuma Town where the evacuation order was lifted are introduced here in detail.
Status of Agricultural Produce Exports
Although prices of prefectural products are recovering, some items have not recovered to pre-earthquake levels. On the other hand, exports have increased compared to before the earthquake, and farming has gradually resumed in the affected areas.

I want you to know more about Fukushima
The Reconstruction Agency was established to resolutely implement reconstruction projects together with areas affected by the disaster without being bound by precedent, with the aim of recovering from the Great East Japan Earthquake.
10 years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake and TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident occurred. This video introduces Fukushima’s progress on safety and reconstruction, focusing on the Power Plant's decommissioning process bringing together.(Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan channel)
